Currency

Translation by Hans Perl Matanzo

Under independence, Puerto Rico will have the prerogative to emit a national currency. This sovereign power permits a country to establish its own monetary policy, emit the amount of currency it wishes to maintain in circulation, establish and modify the value of the national currency relative to other currencies, and regulate the interest rates in light of the country's necessities, so as to stimulate the economy and control inflation rates.

As an independent country, Puerto Rico will have the opportunity to emit a national currency, use the U.S. dollar, or chose to do both. That has been the choice of other countries such as Panama and Argentina. It is beneficial to the United States when other countries use the U.S. dollar since it facilitates the flow of capital between both countries.

A country's level of production of goods and services is the factor which validates its finance system; its soundness, acceptability and international conversion capacity. Independence would conduce to a intensification of Puerto Rico's economic development, which in turn would lead to strong national currency, recognized by Puerto Ricans and foreigners alike.
