THE 22nd Ordinary Assembly of the Latin American
Parliament (PARLATINO), which met recently in Sao Paulo,
Brazil, passed a resolution supporting freedom for the
Cuban Five, the anti-terrorist fighters unjustly locked
up in U.S. prisons for more than eight years.
The document urges “the competent authorities in the
United States that the five Cuban citizens should be
freed immediately...” This resolution was proposed by
the Venezuelan delegation, which had recently passed a
similar resolution in their country.
The many resolutions adopted also included one on
Operation Miracle in Latin America and the Caribbean,
resolving that the PARLATINO General Assembly “...supports,
with actions within its legislative competence in the
Hemisphere, the participation of countries in this
humanitarian mission of international solidarity.” In
addition, the deputies of 20 nations at this meeting
expressed their solidarity with the sister people of
Puerto Rico and urged parliamentary deputies to adopt
concrete actions to support them in their struggle to
become a free and independent nation.
The report by the outgoing presiding committee was
given before the election of that PARLATINO body for a
two-year term, during which it will include Senator
Sergio Pizarro of Chile, as chair, and Deputy Amílcar
Figueroa of Venezuela, as alternate chair.
Cuba has had outstanding participation in this
regional Parliament: Deputy Ramón Pez Ferro was on its
presiding committee for four years, and three Cuban
parliamentarians will continue to be members of
PARLATINO committees: Diana Martínez Piti, who heads the
one on health; José A. Díaz Duque, deputy chair of the
one on education, culture, science, technology and
communication; and Nieves Alemañy, secretary of the one
on gender, childhood and youth.
