Political groups from the entire continent
participated in the Latin American and Caribbean
Congress for the Independence of Puerto Rico, last
weekend in Panama. They designated a permanent working
committee of 15 members.
The activity marked the 60th anniversary of the
creation of the Puerto Rican Pro-Independence Party.
One of the participants, Ricardo Alarcon, president
of the Cuban People’s Power National Assembly, recalled
that the struggle for independence in Puerto Rico has a
long story.
“We have to finish what began 180 years ago (in 1826)
in the Panamanian Congress, which agenda included Puerto
Rico’s independence”, he said.
One of the Puerto Rican representatives, Rosa
Meneses, denounced the situation suffered by Puerto
Rican prisoners of conscience.
She explained that pro-independence activists Carlos
Alberto Torres, Oscar Lopez Rivera and Haydeé Beltrán
have been in prison for 25 years.
“It’s time to bring them home”, Meneses added. She
called for the “solidarity of all the peoples” in order
to demand the activists’ freedom. |
