El Secretario de Relaciones con Norteamérica del
Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño, Manuel Rodríguez
Orellana, hizo la siguiente declaración en torno a la
visita de la delegada de Islas Vírgenes, Donna
Christensen, al gobernador Acevedo Vilá, y sobre sus
expresiones en torno al proceso de estatus en el
Congreso federal:
La visita de la señora Christensen a Fortaleza
únicamente y sus expresiones como presidenta del
Subcomité de Asuntos Insulares de la Cámara de
Representantes federal son lamentables. Los pasados
presidentes de ese organismo, Ron De Lugo – también de
Islas Vírgenes – y Don Young tuvieron cierto decoro ante
la tarea de presidir un proceso y se reunieron con todas
las partes.
Si bien es cierto que en el Congreso anterior la
señora Christensen había apoyado un proyecto de asamblea
constituyente colonial, su función ahora es diferente.
Preside una subcomisión que debe atender otros
proyectos; y la delegada de Islas Vírgenes debió
cuidarse de manifestar lo que parece una parcialización
candorosa hacia un proyecto, como el que favorece el
gobernador Acevedo, para que Puerto Rico permanezca como
posesión territorial de Estados Unidos, igual que Islas
Vírgenes.
Esperamos que supere la tentación de asumir el triste
papel de capataz de la finca colonial de sus amos.

by Virgin Islands congressional delegate, Donna
Christensen, with Governor Acevedo Vilá and her
expression about the status process in Washington

Independence Party Secretary for Relations with North
America released the following statments:
Ms. Christensen’s visit only with commonwealth
governor Acevedo and her statements as chair of the
House of Representatives Insular Affairs Subcommittee
supporting his preferred status bill are rather
disappointing. Past subcommittee chairmen, Ron De Lugo –
also from the Virgin Islands – and Don Young, behaved
with greater decorum in presiding over a legislative
process on status, and met with all interested parties.
Although in the last Congress Ms. Christensen had
supported a bill favored by the governor for a so-called
constituent assembly within the limitations of federal
legislation that created colonial commonwealth, her role
now is different. She now chairs a subcommittee that
must consider other bills in a decolonization process;
and she should have been more careful in utterances that
sound naively partial towards a bill, such as that
favored by Governor Acevedo, that would keep Puerto Rico
as a territorial possession of the United States, like
the U.S. Virgin Islands.
I hope she will overcome the pitiful role of acting
on behalf of her colonial rulers to keep the restless
colonial natives in line. |
