PANAMA (PL) - With the attendance of more than 200 delegates from 22 countries, the Latin American and Caribbean Congress for Puerto Rico´s Independence closed Sunday in Panama.

Representatives of different parties, organizations and movements analyzed the situation of the island, occupied by the US since 1898.

"Puerto Rico is the only Latin American region remaining under colonial regimen. For Latin Americans, helping to correct that anomaly should be a matter of principles, a continental priority," stated Panamanian President Martin Torrijos.

We can not continue indifferent to this analysis and on the contrary it is our duty to take part actively in its adequate solution, the dignitary stressed.

For his part, Ruben Berrios, leader of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), called on the participants to create committees of solidarity with the island in the different countries of the region.

"Colonialism in Puerto Rico is an affront against Latin America, we are the only great colony in the world," Berrios highlighted and referred to the lengthy struggle of his people for its liberation.

Javier Diez, leader of the Peruvian Socialist Party, considered the matter goes beyond the Latin American Leftwing followers as it has to do with principles and the unity of peoples in the region.
