Orellana. PIP denounces NPP plebiscite as a
farce
Press release
San Juan, Puerto Rico - August 10,
2010 The Puerto Rican Independence Party Secretary for
North American Relations, Manuel Rodríguez Orellana,
called resident commissioner Pedro Pierluisi’s statement
regarding a status referendum “a farce, a smoke screen
to hide his complicity with the United States colonial
regime over Puerto Rico.”
Rodríguez Orellana reiterated the PIP’s refusal to
“collaborate with the Fortuño-Pierluisi plan to hold an
irrational plebiscite, not conducive to Puerto Rico’s
decolonization.”
The PIP has proposed a referéndum demanding that the
U.S. government commit to respond to a decolonization
petition based on the options recognized by
international law. According to the PIP proposal, Puerto
Rico would also vote to choose the method by which such
demand would be presented. “We favor a constitutional
assembly on status as the most fair and democratic way
to go about it; but others may propose a different
method,” according to the former PIP senator.
“We warned the resident commissioner that his
proposed bill [HR 2499] was ‘a dead man walking’ and
would never make it through the legislative process. It
contains the poison pill of a statehood option that he
knows is unacceptable to the U.S. government,” said
Rodríguez Orellana.
“Moreover,” he added, “it offers the present
undemocratic status as an option twice, even if the
people had previously rejected it. I don’t know how he
could accept this travesty, as amended by the U.S. House
of Representatives; how he could defend it before the
Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources; or how
he dares to propose it now to the people of Puerto Rico.
It makes no sense,” according to the PIP oficial.
“Neither Fortuño nor Pierluisi have the intention to
decolonize and lead Puerto Rico towards a truly free and
fully democratic system,” he explained. |
